Symptoms of Toenail Fungus
Also known as onychomycosis, toenail fungus is a common occurrence. Symptoms of toenail fungus include inflammation and swelling in the toe area, while the nails usually become thicker, yellow, or crumble. Toenail fungus is inconvenient although it is rarely painful unless the infection spreads to other parts.
What Causes Toenail Fungus
Certain conditions can cause toenail fungus to thrive, such as abnormal PH levels, frequent exposure to moisture in shoes and socks, diabetes, poor hygiene, and a weak immune system.
If toenail fungus is left untreated, it can cause split nails, cracking, and even complete loss of the actual nail. However, there are many natural remedies that can effectively cure toenail fungus:
Natural Remedies for Toenail Fungus
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is a powerful fungicidal as well as an antiseptic that works well in the treatment of toenail fungus. It is first important to cleanse the area surrounding the affected toenail with alcohol prior to the application of tea tree oil. Leave for around 10 minutes, then use a soft bristled toothbrush to gently scrub the toenail.
Application: Add one part of tea tree oil to one part carrier oil (avocado or coconut oil are recommended), then apply to the nail. Repeat this procedure once every day until the new nail has successfully grown out. Once this occurs continue this treatment for the next three weeks to prevent the fungus from growing back again.
Apple Cider Vinegar & Epson Salt
Apple cider vinegar and Epson salt is a great mixture that can help with toenail fungus. Mix one part organic apple cider vinegar with one part Epsom salt into 6 parts of warm water. Soak your feet in this solution for 30 minutes twice a day until the fungus has reduced.
Olive Leaf Extract
This supplement is potent in killing fungal infections. Olive leaf has many valuable therapeutic properties such as being antiviral as well as antifungal.
Directly apply pure coconut oil to the infected toenail, and let it stay for at least 30 minutes. Coconut oil contains caprylic acid, which can effectively penetrate the tough cell wall found in many kinds of fungi.
Benefits: This oil is also known for its beneficial effects on the skin and will be helpful in restoring moisture and health.
Lavender Essential Oil
Put a few drops of organic lavender essential oil directly on the affected toenail each night before you sleep. You can also opt to cover your feet in socks to prevent the lavender oil from rubbing off, just make sure that you don’t use socks made with a synthetic material or this can aggravate the infection.
How Long?: Continue the application of lavender oil for up to 2 weeks even after healing has completed just to ensure you are preventing the fungus from returning.
Complement your natural remedy for toenail fungus by consuming probiotics. This will help keep your gut strong with the right kind of healthy bacteria that will inhibit the growth of microbes and parasitic fungi, even in other parts of the body.
Oregano Essential Oil
Add some organic oregano essential oil into your carrier oil of choice. Use a cotton swab to apply this mixture to the infected toenail. Oregano has several health benefits but is one of the most powerful herbs when it comes to killing the fungus.
